Considering the interaction between climate scales, as proposed by Monteiro (1976; 2013), this study aimed to analyze the atmospheric conditions and associated damages of the extreme weather event that occurred in January 2020 in the Pomba and Muriaé river basins (BHRPM). During that month, 54.8% of the days were marked by the presence of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), with the most severe impacts observed in the Muriaé River basin. The results indicate that flood-related damages in the BHRPM are linked to the influence of the SACZ, but also to land use patterns and rainfall-runoff dynamics, since the municipalities with the highest rainfall totals were not necessarily the most affected by the flooding impacts.
