Abstract

            This is indeed a contribution that throws light on the complex problem of fishing off the Santa Catarina seabord, and the author studies the physical background of this industry, going into the coastal morphology and climatic aspects of the littoral; the human pattern of the fishing, together with the historical antecedents there of, coastal settlement and the attraction of immigrants from de Azores; the fishing population of the littoral from the point of view of distribution, activities, human types and social and economic conditions, skillpully analyzing the "camarada" of wage-earner, the owner of boats and tackle, the middleman, the manufactures of special equipment, etc.

            In. the part dealing with the economic problem of tackle and equipment, particular attention is paid to the nature of the gear, to fishing zones, subsidiary industries and fish production, which is arranged in the form of schematic tables.

            In the historical part, fishing along the Atlantic seaboard of what is now the southern state of Santa Catarina is taken back prior to the discovery of Brazil by Cabral in 1500 and its development from then on traced up to our days when it comes under the influence of modern technique, subservient in every way to the tendencies and requirements of progress and the commercial laws that regulate the relationship between the fisherman, the intermediary, the financial backer and the buyer.

            Considerable informative value is to be attached to the specific bibliography that supports the author's observations and to the maps and photographs that illustrate the text.
