NEIGHBORHOODS AND CENSUS STATUS

Abstract

This article addresses the neighborhood as a spatial category that, i) expresses a relationship of lived experience and identification between population and place, and ii) represents a political-administrative division used in territorial planning. It is a multidisciplinary investigation supported by bibliographic research, initially of a historical approach, using the city of Rio de Janeiro as a reference, and then analyzing methodological, normative, and legal instruments, especially those used in the 2022 Demographic Census, conducted by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), and its maps and address registry. Thus, it seeks to discuss the notion of place and neighborhood, its operationality for statistical research and local planning, to underpin a new cycle of updates aimed at the 2030 Demographic Census.
