Analysis of the influence of urbanization and economic dynamics on the population evolution of municipalities in the Bolsão and Campo Grande Administrative Regions of Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract

The article analyzes the demographic growth of twenty one municipalities in the administrative regions (RA – portuguese acronym) of Bolsão and Campo Grande within the brazilian’s state of Mato Grosso do Sul, between 1980 and 2022, using Census data to investigate the economic impacts on the demographic growth and vice-versa. The analysis begins with territorial occupation prior to the state's emancipation in 1977, addressing the expansion driven by colonization campaigns and internal migrations, besides posterior State-driven economic planning “POLOCENTRO” under the military dictatorship (1964-1985), that established the region economic’s base towards agriculture and extrativistic economy in brazilian Centro-Oeste Region. Therefore, it correlates the municipalities demographic growth and its recent economic dynamics in the Regions within the studied time span. The results highlight that urbanization and changes in land use and occupation driven by agribusiness were key factors in understanding the dynamics of population growth in the regions. Furthermore, we observed that the population growth curves for Campo Grande and Três Lagoas-MS are inversely proportional to those of other municipalities in their respective Administrative Regions, which could be evidence of the state's urban network influencing population dynamics.
