In 1966, December and 1967, January continuous rainfalls had fallen on the area of Serra das Araras. This heavy pluvial concentration have caused many and serious disasters on that range. Beside a series of soil sidings as a result of intense sheet erosion and detrital accumulation, as well as earth and rock falling-in, which have broken-off the traffic in the Rio - São Paulo Highway, it stopped to an important power plant, destroyed some houses and caused the death to some people.
This work tries to examine the natural conditions in the area and the man interference in it as one of the factors which cause such a disaster, and suggest some measures to diminish the effect of the heavy rainfalls.
