Resumo

Abstract:

This work is part of a project – Surveying of the Brazilian mangrove areas of the "Superintendência de Recursos Naturais" (SUPREN) of the "Diretoria Técnica" of IBGE. Several aims, among others, can be emphasized: the surveying and mapping of the mangrove areas, the valuation of their potentiality as an economical resource, the study of the environmental quality, and the detection of the spatial and environmental alterations in selected areas (estuarine environment).

The project may be justified by several reasons: the mangrove areas constitute an important renewable natural resource; they are included among the more productive ecosystems of the world; their potential is little known or even unknown; in many parts of the Brazilian littoral they occur in very extensive areas; and they have been degraded little by little.

Other studies, aiming at a better knowledge of the different components of the above mentioned environment, would make it possible to evaluate the advantages or disadvantages not only of its maintenance, but also of the creation of biological reserves, as proposed by the "Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência" (April, 1978), to the "recôncavo" of Guanabara Bay.
