Resumo

The author's purpose is to study the rural development considering, at the same time, the influences of the concepts of agrarian modernization, the role of rural activities in the regional development and evaluation of urban effects on rural development.

At first approach to the study is accomplished in national scale (taking a homogeneous micro-region as an observation unit and the results of 1970 "Censo Agropecuário" as data source), aiming, above all, to identify unlikeness or convergence between agrarian activities development and characteristics of rural population welfare.

Studies are also developed in macro-·regional extent using the municipality as observation unit in order to find the variation caused in the dimensions of rura1 development by changing the scale to analyze the problem.

The research on rural development is, at first, an office work and then a direct research in areas to be chosen, starting from the office work results.

The analysis of the agrarian modernization rates, factors and conditions of development and the rate of rural population welfare is achieved through the single and multiple regression technique in order to perceive explanatory mechanism of rural development. Multi-varied techniques are also employed to derive typologies of rural development (one at national level and the other at macro-regional level) trying to fit the spatial structure of rural development in one of the regional development models.

Due to the lack of geographical studies on rural development in Brazil, the As. hope the study they intend to develop may be useful to the enlargement and adjustment of an existent conceptual picture to the Brazilian reality and the determination of a methodology to deal with the subject related to rural development.
